Four weeks out: the boring stuff wins
Book your van before anything else. Manchester weekends go fast, and the good teams are spoken for weeks ahead, so lock in the date the moment you know it.
Tell your landlord or estate agent the dates in writing, even if the tenancy allows a week's slack. It costs nothing and removes a whole class of last minute stress.
Redirect your post with Royal Mail, four to six weeks is the honest lead time, and change the address on bank cards, the driving licence and your car documents.
If you are moving into a flat above a shop or a building with a service lift, ask the management company about goods lift bookings and loading bay rules now, not on the morning of the move.
Two weeks out: packing proper
Pack room by room, not topic by topic. A box labelled kitchen, a box labelled bathroom, and a marker pen that actually works. Order beats cleverness on a move day.
Soft wrap the fragile things as you go, plates stacked on their edges, glasses in rolled tea towels, and fill every gap with newspaper so nothing rattles.
Book the utilities: electric, gas, broadband and water all need a start date and an end date. You can do this in one afternoon and forget about it.
If you are moving with furniture you no longer want, this is the moment to book a collection, either a charity pickup or a clearance run, so it does not travel with you.
One week out: the dress rehearsal
Pack the first night box: kettle, mugs, teabags, loo roll, soap, a towel, bedding for one night, phone chargers and a change of clothes. Label it LAST and keep it by the door.
Measure the doorways and stairwells at the new place, including the bend in the stairs. Sofas go in at surprising angles and it is better to know the width now.
Defrost the freezer, drain the washing machine and disconnect the telly wall mounts. Leave the walls as you found them and the deposit follows.
Confirm with us the day before: time, address, access notes and what is going where. A five minute phone call saves an hour on the day.
Move day: who does what
You point, we carry. Have someone at the door of the old place directing what goes on the van, and someone at the new place directing what comes off. Two directors beat twenty helpers.
Empty the drawers before we arrive. A chest of drawers full of clothes weighs twice as much and moves half as safely.
Keep the kettle and the chargers out of the van, they live in the first night box with you, not with the furniture.
Walk the old property after the last load: cupboards, loft hatch, garden shed and the space behind the fridge. The thing you forget lives in one of those four places.
The first week after
Sort the post, the council tax and the TV licence before the second week, and tell the electoral register where you live. It sounds dull and it quietly matters.
Test the smoke alarms and the stopcock in the first week, not the first month. Find them now and label them with a sticker.
Register with the new GP and dentist while you still remember which one you are meant to choose.
Change the address on the parcels apps you use daily. A missed delivery notice chasing you across town is the least romantic part of any new home.
